Keeping a clean home often means dealing with chemicals, many of which are harmful to the environment or irritating to the skin. But chemical solutions aren't the only available cleaning products out there! Many lesser-known items are not only safer but sometimes yield better results. Here are 4 of KLIIN's favourite lesser-known cleaning products.

Blanc de Meudon

The first item on our list is a relatively uncommon substance. Sometimes called Meudon Whiting or Spanish Whiting, Blanc de Meudon is made from calcium carbonate. It’s most often used in paint because of its pristine white pigment, but it’s also great for cleaning.

This fine, light powder’s mild abrasiveness makes it well-suited for polishing valuable surfaces. It makes your marble counters and silverware shine. To transform it into a cleaning product, simply mix the powder with water until it forms a paste. Apply it to the surface you want to clean, scrub, rinse, and voila!

Clove oil

We most often associate cloves with chai tea or a holiday meal. But did you know that these fragrant flower buds are also excellent for cleaning? Clove has fantastic anti-mould properties, and when transformed into an essential oil, it's great for eliminating pesky spots of mildew.

For effective use, mix a quarter teaspoon of clove oil with a quart of water. Then, spray the mixture on the surface where the mould is located. After 20 minutes, wipe down the area, removing the residue. Finally, spray the area again and let it dry completely to prevent the mould from growing back.

Citric acid

Don't worry&mdashjust because it's an acid doesn't mean it belongs in a lab. In fact, most of us encounter citric acid every day. As the name implies, it's what gives lemons and other citric fruits their sour bite.

To use citric acid as a cleaning product, mix a small amount of fresh lemon juice with water. This solution can remove mineral deposits, water stains, mould, and more. Another plus? It gives your home a pleasant, lemony scent!

Our dish cleansing paste
